Sail the TANGER MED - ALGECIRAS route aboard TRASMEDITERRANEA's fleet, one of the key operators linking southern Spain with North Africa.
About TRASMEDITERRANEA
Founded in Barcelona in 1917, Trasmediterranea has grown into Spain's leading shipping company, connecting the mainland ports with the Balearic and Canary Islands, the autonomous cities of Ceuta and Melilla, and destinations across North Africa. Onboard, travellers can expect a modern fleet and a wide range of services, from à la carte restaurants to swimming pools and boutique shops, making the crossing part of the holiday itself.
Tanger Med
The Tanger Med port complex stretches along the Strait of Gibraltar coastline, some forty kilometres east of Tangier, near the small village of Ksar Sghir, a historic crossing point between the two shores of the Mediterranean. The wider region, heir to ancient Tingis and a crossroads for millennia between Africa, Europe and the Arab-Berber world, saw Phoenicians, Romans, Byzantines and successive Arab-Muslim dynasties pass through, followed by European influence and Moroccan independence in 1956. It was against this strategic backdrop that, in the early 2000s, the kingdom launched construction of a deep-water port designed to become a global logistics hub: Tanger Med opened in 2007, followed by a second phase, Tanger Med II, inaugurated in 2019. It now ranks as the largest port in Africa and the Mediterranean by container volume. A vast free-trade industrial zone has grown up around it, employing tens of thousands of workers in the automotive, textile and logistics sectors. Beyond freight, Tanger Med is home to one of Morocco's largest passenger terminals, welcoming several million travellers a year from Algeciras, Tarifa and Barcelona. Together with the nearby port of Tangier city, it forms Morocco's main maritime gateway to Europe.
Tanger Med Ferry Terminal
The passenger terminal sits within the Tanger Med port complex at Ksar Sghir, about 40 kilometres east of central Tangier, reached via the A4 motorway and then the N16 road (GPS: 35.77° N, 5.80° W). With no direct rail or public transport link, travelling by car, taxi, or one of the shuttle services some companies run from Tangier is the best option. Since the crossing to Spain is international, passport and customs checks are mandatory before boarding, for foot passengers and vehicles alike. Foot passengers should allow at least 3 hours before departure, while vehicles may need 4 to 6 hours during high season.
Algeciras
Facing the Rock of Gibraltar at the eastern mouth of the strait that bears its name, Algeciras is home to roughly 120,000 people on a site that has been settled since prehistoric times. A Phoenician trading post and later a Roman town, it flourished under Arab rule from 711 onward, taking its modern name from Al-Jazira Al-Khadra, "the green island." Fought over for centuries by Christian and Muslim kingdoms, it was finally taken by Castile in 1344 after a famously long siege. Traces of that past survive in the Plaza Alta, the church of Nuestra Señora de la Palma and remnants of its Marinid-era walls; the town is also known as the birthplace of guitarist Paco de Lucía. Today its harbour is Spain's busiest and one of Europe's largest by tonnage, serving as a transshipment hub linking Asia, the Americas and the Mediterranean. Handling several million passengers a year, it is also the main crossing point between Europe and Morocco, making it a cornerstone of ferry links to North Africa.
Algeciras Ferry Terminal
The Estación Marítima lies within the port area, just a short walk from Algeciras town centre and its railway station. Local buses serve it well, and it's easily reached by taxi or car from the A-7/AP-7 motorway by following signs for "Puerto / Estación Marítima." Passport and customs checks are standard, and can be more thorough on crossings to Morocco. Foot passengers should allow around 1 hour before departure, and 1.5 to 2 hours with a vehicle, with considerably more time needed in high season due to queues.
