The capital of the eastern Rif in Morocco, Nador is a city of around 160,000 people, built on the shores of the Marchica lagoon, the largest Mediterranean lagoon in North Africa. Unlike its centuries-old neighbours, Nador is a recent creation: it was founded in 1912 as a military outpost of the Spanish protectorate, close to the enclave of Melilla. Its growth accelerated after Morocco's independence in 1956, driven first by Rif mining and then by booming cross-border trade with Melilla. The Marchica lagoon, once used mainly for traditional fishing, is now the focus of a major tourism and urban development programme led by the Moroccan state. Nador remains an important centre of Amazigh (Berber) culture in the Rif, with a linguistic and social identity distinct from the rest of the country. Emigration also shapes the city deeply, with a large share of its population having family settled in Europe. Its harbour, at Beni Ensar on the lagoon shore, plays a growing economic role for both freight and the movement of Moroccans living abroad, and forms the main direct maritime link between the eastern Rif and Spain.
Nador Ferry Terminal
The terminal is located in Beni Ensar, about 12 kilometres northeast of central Nador, along the coastal road towards Melilla. Access is mainly by car, taxi or shared grand taxi from Nador's bus station, as no railway serves the port directly. Police and customs formalities are mandatory before boarding since this is an international crossing between Morocco and Spain; a valid passport is required for all passengers. Foot passengers should allow at least 3 hours before departure, with more time needed during peak periods such as the summer Marhaba operation.
