Departure Port

Almería

Home to around 200,000 people, Almería sits in southeastern Andalusia between the Sierra de Gádor and the gulf that shares its name. It was founded in 955 by Abd al-Rahman III, the Umayyad caliph of Córdoba, who made it the naval base of his caliphate under the name Al-Mariyya, "the watchtower." Through the 11th and 12th centuries the city enjoyed a spectacular golden age, growing into one of Al-Andalus's great centres thanks to hundreds of silk workshops and thriving Mediterranean trade. Its fortunes faded after the Christian reconquest of 1147, and it was permanently absorbed into the Crown of Castile in 1489. From that era it keeps its landmark Alcazaba, a vast triple-walled Moorish fortress overlooking the bay, along with a fortified cathedral built to withstand Barbary raids after the earthquake of 1522. Almería today anchors an intensive greenhouse-farming economy that ranks among Spain's most dynamic, while remaining a popular destination for its coastline and the Cabo de Gata nature reserve. Its port, long oriented toward North Africa, remains one of Spain's principal gateways to Algeria and Morocco.

Practical Information

Almería Ferry Terminal

The terminal stands at Estación Marítima s/n, right in the city centre, a short walk from the historic quarter and the Alcazaba fortress (GPS: 36.834° N, 2.464° W). Its central location makes it easy to reach on foot, by city bus, or by taxi from the railway station about 1.5 km away. Passport checks take place on site before boarding, so allowing at least 2 hours before departure is advisable.

Arrival Port

Ghazaouet

A small coastal town of around 25,000 people in western Algeria, Ghazaouet sits at the head of a sheltered bay, not far from the Moroccan border and the city of Oujda. The site has been visited since antiquity: the Romans, struck by two rocks rising offshore, named it "Ad Fratres," the two brothers. Its modern growth began in 1844, when Marshal Bugeaud's French troops settled there for good; renamed Nemours in 1847 in honour of the duke of that name, it gained modern port infrastructure — breakwaters, jetties and quays — between 1861 and 1902, making it one of the country's leading fishing ports. It reclaimed its original name, Ghazaouet, at Algerian independence in 1962. Set against the foothills of the Traras mountains, the town has kept the feel of a lively small fishing port, known for its fish market and a quieter seafront life than Algeria's larger coastal cities. Its modern harbour, with four basins and nearly 1,700 metres of quays, is now the westernmost starting point for Algeria's maritime links to Spain, offering the shortest crossing to the Iberian Peninsula via Almería.

Practical Information

Ghazaouet Ferry Terminal

The terminal sits right within Ghazaouet's harbour, close to the town centre and its seafront (GPS: 35.10° N, 1.86° W). It's an easy walk from the centre, or a short taxi ride from the surrounding area and from Tlemcen, the nearest city with an airport. As with any international crossing between Algeria and Spain, passport and customs checks are compulsory before boarding. Allow at least 3 hours before the scheduled departure, and expect that window to grow during the busy summer season.
