The Port

Ceuta

A Spanish autonomous city of just over 83,000 people, Ceuta occupies a uniquely strategic spot at the mouth of the Strait of Gibraltar, on the North African coast facing mainland Spain. Settled as early as the first millennium BC by Phoenician sailors and later developed by the Carthaginians, it became the Roman town of Septem Fratres before passing through Byzantine and then Umayyad rule. Portuguese control from 1415 — one of the opening chapters of European overseas expansion — gave way to the Spanish crown in 1580, a status it has held ever since despite ongoing Moroccan claims. The old town still bears the marks of that long history: the imposing moated Royal Walls, the hilltop fort of Monte Hacho overlooking the bay, and a cathedral built over the remains of a former mosque. Home to Christian, Muslim, Jewish and Hindu communities alike, Ceuta has a border-town, cosmopolitan character rare in the Mediterranean. A free port for much of its history, it now lives on cross-border trade with Morocco, fishing and activity tied to its military garrison. Sitting right at the strait's exit, it is a key link in maritime routes between mainland Spain, via Algeciras, and the African continent.

Practical Information

Ceuta Ferry Terminal

The ferry terminal sits at Muelle Cañonero Dato, on the seafront, just a short walk from the historic centre and Plaza de los Reyes (GPS: 35.89° N, 5.32° W). It's easily reached on foot from the old town or by taxi from any part of Ceuta. Although Ceuta is administratively part of Spain, its position as an enclave surrounded by Morocco means police and customs checks apply systematically at boarding, even for travellers arriving from the Iberian mainland; a valid ID or passport is therefore required. During busy periods, arriving at least 2 to 3 hours before the scheduled departure is recommended.
