The Port

Melilla

A Spanish autonomous city of around 86,000 people, Melilla occupies a rocky headland on the Rif coast, facing the Mediterranean. Founded by the Phoenicians as Rusadir, it later came under Carthaginian and then Roman rule before passing through Byzantine and Islamic periods, notably flourishing as a port under the Idrisid dynasty from the 9th century onward. Retaken in 1497 by Pedro de Estopiñán on behalf of the Catholic Monarchs, it was formally attached to the Spanish crown through successive 18th- and 19th-century treaties. The fortified old town, Melilla la Vieja, with its ramparts and bastions overlooking the sea, bears witness to that long military history. In the early 20th century Melilla also developed a distinctive architectural identity thanks to Enrique Nieto, a disciple of Gaudí, who created one of Spain's finest Art Nouveau and Art Deco ensembles. Nicknamed the "city of four cultures" for its coexisting Christian, Muslim, Jewish and Hindu communities, it became an autonomous city in 1995. Its economy leans heavily on cross-border trade with neighbouring Morocco, fishing and public administration. The harbour, built at the foot of the old town, has always been its sole maritime gateway to the Spanish mainland.

Practical Information

Melilla Ferry Terminal

The terminal is located at General Marina 1, at the heart of the port, just below Melilla la Vieja and the modern town centre (GPS: 35.29° N, 2.93° W). It's about a fifteen-minute walk from the centre, or reachable by taxi from outlying districts. As with Ceuta, Melilla's status as an enclave means police and customs checks apply systematically before boarding, even for sailings to mainland Spain; a valid ID or passport is required. Plan to arrive at the terminal at least 2 to 3 hours before the scheduled departure.
