The Port

Valencia

Spain's third-largest city with close to 790,000 residents and nearly 1.9 million across its metropolitan area, Valencia is a major economic and cultural centre on the Mediterranean coast. Founded in 138 BC by the Romans as Valentia Edetanorum, it became the capital of the Christian Kingdom of Valencia after being retaken by James I of Aragon in 1238, ending several centuries of Muslim rule. Its heritage reflects that eventful history, from the Lonja de la Seda, a UNESCO-listed masterpiece of civil Gothic architecture where silk was once traded, to the cathedral said to house the Holy Grail, and on to the City of Arts and Sciences, a spectacular futuristic complex designed by Calatrava. The city is also known for its Fallas festival, its rice dishes and paella, and for the centuries-old Water Tribunal, itself recognised by UNESCO. Economically, Valencia is home to Spain's leading cargo port and one of the Mediterranean's largest container hubs, alongside thriving automotive, chemical and food industries. Its maritime terminal is an essential gateway to the Balearic Islands and North Africa.

Practical Information

Valencia Ferry Terminal

The Estación Marítima sits at Muelle de Poniente within Valencia's port complex, about 4 to 5 kilometres from the historic centre. It's linked to downtown by tram and dedicated bus lines, with the journey taking around fifteen to twenty minutes; a taxi is also a fast alternative. Passport and customs checks are mandatory for any international sailing, including those to Algeria, so arriving 2 to 3 hours ahead of departure is recommended, particularly in summer.
