Built on a narrow spit of land in the bay of the same name, Cadiz has around 115,000 residents and claims the title of continuously inhabited Western Europe's oldest city. Founded around 1100 BC by the Phoenicians as Gadir, it later passed through Carthaginian, Roman, Visigothic and Muslim hands before being retaken by Christian forces in 1262. Its true golden age arrived after the discovery of the Americas: by the 18th century the city held a monopoly on trade with the New World and had become one of Spain's richest ports. That prosperous era left behind a Baroque cathedral crowned with a golden dome, the Tavira Tower, its old ramparts and the Castle of San Sebastián. Cadiz also holds a place in political history as the birthplace of Spain's first Constitution, proclaimed in 1812 during the Napoleonic siege, and today it is famous for one of Spain's most spirited carnivals. Its economy rests on fishing, shipbuilding and tourism, while its harbour remains a historic anchor point for maritime routes to the Canary Islands.
Cadiz Ferry Terminal
The Trasmediterránea terminal sits right next to Cadiz's railway station, an easy walk from the old town. Travellers based in the historic centre can simply walk over, while those coming from further out will find buses and taxis readily available. Because the Canary Islands sit outside the EU's VAT zone, sailings there involve a document and customs check, so it's worth allowing extra time — arriving roughly 2 to 3 hours ahead is recommended, especially during the busiest summer crossings.
