Facing the Rock of Gibraltar at the eastern mouth of the strait that bears its name, Algeciras is home to roughly 120,000 people on a site that has been settled since prehistoric times. A Phoenician trading post and later a Roman town, it flourished under Arab rule from 711 onward, taking its modern name from Al-Jazira Al-Khadra, "the green island." Fought over for centuries by Christian and Muslim kingdoms, it was finally taken by Castile in 1344 after a famously long siege. Traces of that past survive in the Plaza Alta, the church of Nuestra Señora de la Palma and remnants of its Marinid-era walls; the town is also known as the birthplace of guitarist Paco de Lucía. Today its harbour is Spain's busiest and one of Europe's largest by tonnage, serving as a transshipment hub linking Asia, the Americas and the Mediterranean. Handling several million passengers a year, it is also the main crossing point between Europe and Morocco, making it a cornerstone of ferry links to North Africa.
Algeciras Ferry Terminal
The Estación Marítima lies within the port area, just a short walk from Algeciras town centre and its railway station. Local buses serve it well, and it's easily reached by taxi or car from the A-7/AP-7 motorway by following signs for "Puerto / Estación Marítima." Passport and customs checks are standard, and can be more thorough on crossings to Morocco. Foot passengers should allow around 1 hour before departure, and 1.5 to 2 hours with a vehicle, with considerably more time needed in high season due to queues.
