Andalusia's second city with around 580,000 residents and nearly a million across its metropolitan area, Malaga is one of Europe's oldest cities, founded in the 8th century BC by the Phoenicians as Malaka. It passed through Carthaginian and then Roman rule — a period during which it exported its famous garum sauce to Rome — before Muslim forces took it in 743, making it a stronghold first of the Emirate and then the Caliphate of Córdoba, and later part of the Nasrid Kingdom of Granada until its reconquest by the Catholic Monarchs in 1487. That Moorish legacy survives in the 11th-century Alcazaba fortress and the Gibralfaro castle above it, while the cathedral — nicknamed "la Manquita" for its unfinished tower — dates from the Christian era. Birthplace of Pablo Picasso in 1881, the city is now home to a museum dedicated to the artist and a lively cultural scene. A pioneer of Spanish industrialisation in the 19th century, Malaga has reinvented itself since the 1960s as the tourism and technology capital of the Costa del Sol. Its harbour, redeveloped around the Palmeral de las Sorpresas promenade, combines cruise traffic with ferry links to Melilla and Morocco.
Malaga Ferry Terminal
The Estación Marítima stands at Palmeral de las Sorpresas, right at the edge of the historic centre, about ten minutes' walk from the cathedral and the Alcazaba. It's an easy walk from downtown, or reachable by bus or taxi from the railway station roughly 20 minutes away on foot. Passport and customs checks are compulsory for sailings to Melilla or Morocco given the particular nature of these routes. Arriving at least 2 to 3 hours before departure is advisable, with more time needed in high season.
