The Port

Mahón

Mahón (Maó in Catalan) is the capital of Minorca, with around 30,000 residents within the town itself. It grew up around one of Europe's longest natural harbours, a deep-water anchorage nearly 6 kilometres long that has shaped its entire history. Tradition traces its founding to Carthaginian times, with the name said to derive from Mago, brother of Hannibal Barca, who is said to have set up a trading post there before the Roman conquest. Contested successively by Vandals, Byzantines and Muslims, the island was absorbed into the Caliphate of Córdoba before being retaken by the Crown of Aragon in 1287. Its most notable chapter is the British occupation, which lasted nearly seventy years from 1708 and turned Mahón into a first-rank trading post in the western Mediterranean. From that period date Fort Saint Philip, now in ruins, and the fortress of La Mola, which still watches over the harbour entrance. The town also lends its name to mayonnaise, said to have been invented in its kitchens in the 18th century. This exceptional natural harbour makes it a major port today, hosting ferries, cruising yachts and regular links to Barcelona, Valencia and Palma.

Practical Information

Mahón Ferry Terminal

Mahón's ferry terminal sits on the Cos Nou quay, in the lower part of the harbour, just a few minutes' walk from the steps leading up to the old town. It's easily reached by taxi or local bus from anywhere in the city, and Menorca's airport is only about ten minutes away by car. As this is a domestic Spanish route, no passport check applies — just the usual check-in at the company desk before boarding. Arriving around 1.5 to 2 hours before departure is recommended, and that window can widen in high summer when vehicle traffic is heavy.
