About TRASMEDITERRANEA
Founded in Barcelona in 1917, Trasmediterranea has grown into Spain's leading shipping company, connecting the mainland ports with the Balearic and Canary Islands, the autonomous cities of Ceuta and Melilla, and destinations across North Africa. Onboard, travellers can expect a modern fleet and a wide range of services, from à la carte restaurants to swimming pools and boutique shops, making the crossing part of the holiday itself.
Ibiza
The capital of its namesake island in the Balearics, Ibiza Town (Eivissa in Catalan) has a population of around 50,000. Settled by the Phoenicians around 654 BC as Ibosim, it grew into a thriving Carthaginian trading post before passing under Roman, then Vandal and Byzantine control, and later Muslim rule from the 10th century onward under the name Yebisah. In 1235 the Catalan nobleman Guillem de Montgrí took the city for the Crown of Aragon, cementing its lasting place within Christian Hispania. Its fortified old town, Dalt Vila, rising above the harbour and crowned by a Gothic cathedral, has held UNESCO World Heritage status since 1999, alongside the nearby Puig des Molins Phoenician-Punic necropolis. Once a quiet fishing and salt-trading port, Ibiza reinvented itself from the 1960s and 70s onward as an international holiday destination, and later as a global capital of nightlife and electronic music. The island is also known for its Posidonia seagrass meadows, a protected marine plant that earned its surrounding waters a separate UNESCO biodiversity listing. Ibiza's harbour, tucked beneath Dalt Vila, ranks among the busiest arrival points in the Balearics for crossings from mainland Spain.
Ibiza Ferry Terminal
The maritime station sits at Moll de Botafoch in the port area, around fifteen minutes on foot from the old quarter of Dalt Vila, or a short taxi or bus ride away. Since Ibiza is fully part of Spanish territory, the crossing to the mainland requires no passport check for EU citizens — a valid ID is enough at check-in. Even so, foot passengers should allow about 1 hour before departure, and those travelling with a vehicle 2 hours, with a noticeably wider margin recommended during the peak summer season.
Formentera
The smallest and southernmost of the inhabited Balearic Islands, Formentera has just over 12,000 residents and, together with Ibiza, forms the Pitiusic archipelago. With no airport of its own, it can only be reached by sea, which has long helped preserve its wild, unspoiled character. Settled since prehistoric times — as shown by the roughly 4,000-year-old megalithic necropolis of Ca Na Costa — the island was later frequented by Phoenicians, Carthaginians and Romans, who called it Frumentaria for its wheat fields. Frequently abandoned in the Middle Ages due to Barbary pirate raids, it was not permanently resettled until 1785, under a royal charter granted by Charles III to the colonist Marc Ferrer. Formentera is now world-famous for the beauty of its turquoise beaches, such as Ses Illetes and Llevant, and for its vast Posidonia seagrass meadows, listed as a UNESCO biosphere reserve in 2019. The isolated lighthouse at Cap de Barbaria, on the island's southern tip, embodies its still-unspoiled character. Its single port, La Savina, is the island's exclusive maritime gateway, with regular links to Ibiza and, during peak season, to the Spanish mainland.
Formentera Ferry Terminal
The terminal sits at the port of La Savina, the island's only harbour, about 4 kilometres north of Sant Francesc Xavier, Formentera's main town. It's reachable by local bus, taxi or car from anywhere on the island, given how compact Formentera is. As a domestic Spanish route, no passport check is required — just the usual check-in at the company counter before boarding. Arriving around 1 to 1.5 hours before departure is recommended, with a noticeably wider margin needed in high summer when tourist numbers surge.
