Departure Port

Ibiza

The capital of its namesake island in the Balearics, Ibiza Town (Eivissa in Catalan) has a population of around 50,000. Settled by the Phoenicians around 654 BC as Ibosim, it grew into a thriving Carthaginian trading post before passing under Roman, then Vandal and Byzantine control, and later Muslim rule from the 10th century onward under the name Yebisah. In 1235 the Catalan nobleman Guillem de Montgrí took the city for the Crown of Aragon, cementing its lasting place within Christian Hispania. Its fortified old town, Dalt Vila, rising above the harbour and crowned by a Gothic cathedral, has held UNESCO World Heritage status since 1999, alongside the nearby Puig des Molins Phoenician-Punic necropolis. Once a quiet fishing and salt-trading port, Ibiza reinvented itself from the 1960s and 70s onward as an international holiday destination, and later as a global capital of nightlife and electronic music. The island is also known for its Posidonia seagrass meadows, a protected marine plant that earned its surrounding waters a separate UNESCO biodiversity listing. Ibiza's harbour, tucked beneath Dalt Vila, ranks among the busiest arrival points in the Balearics for crossings from mainland Spain.

Practical Information

Ibiza Ferry Terminal

The maritime station sits at Moll de Botafoch in the port area, around fifteen minutes on foot from the old quarter of Dalt Vila, or a short taxi or bus ride away. Since Ibiza is fully part of Spanish territory, the crossing to the mainland requires no passport check for EU citizens — a valid ID is enough at check-in. Even so, foot passengers should allow about 1 hour before departure, and those travelling with a vehicle 2 hours, with a noticeably wider margin recommended during the peak summer season.

Arrival Port

Barcelona

Spain's second-largest city, home to roughly 1.6 million people within its boundaries and over 5 million across its wider metropolitan area, Barcelona serves as the capital of Catalonia and stands among the Mediterranean's leading urban centres. Established by the Romans towards the end of the 1st century BC under the name Barcino, the settlement rose to prominence as the seat of the County of Barcelona under Carolingian rule in the 9th century, later emerging in the Middle Ages as a maritime power that held its own against Genoa, Pisa and Venice. That layered past is written into the cityscape today, from the medieval lanes of the Gothic Quarter to Gaudí's Catalan Modernisme landmarks — the Sagrada Família, Park Güell and Casa Milà among them — several of which now carry UNESCO World Heritage status. As the seat of the Catalan government and parliament, Barcelona maintains a distinct cultural identity while also ranking among the world's most visited cities, drawing around 12 million tourists a year since hosting the 1992 Olympics. It is equally a heavyweight in finance, design and international trade. Its harbour, one of the busiest in the Mediterranean, handles everything from cruise liners and freight to long-standing ferry links towards the Balearics, Italy and North Africa.

Practical Information

Barcelona Ferry Terminal

The ferry terminal sits at Moll de Sant Bertran in Port Vell, beneath Montjuïc hill and close to the World Trade Center. It's reachable on foot from the Barceloneta district or the Drassanes metro stop, about fifteen minutes' walk, as well as by bus, port shuttle or taxi. Passport and customs checks apply to any international crossing, notably those to Morocco or Algeria. Plan to arrive at least 2 hours before departure, with more time needed during busy periods given how crowded the port can get.
