About TRASMEDITERRANEA
Founded in Barcelona in 1917, Trasmediterranea has grown into Spain's leading shipping company, connecting the mainland ports with the Balearic and Canary Islands, the autonomous cities of Ceuta and Melilla, and destinations across North Africa. Onboard, travellers can expect a modern fleet and a wide range of services, from à la carte restaurants to swimming pools and boutique shops, making the crossing part of the holiday itself.
Santa Cruz de la Palma
The capital of the island of La Palma, Santa Cruz de la Palma today has just over 15,000 residents, a figure that has stayed remarkably stable since the early 20th century. Founded on 3 May 1493 by the conquistador Alonso Fernández de Lugo as Villa de Apurón, it soon took the name Santa Cruz in reference to the day of its founding. By the 16th century its harbour had become one of the busiest in the Spanish empire, prompting Philip II to establish the first Casa de Contratación branch outside the mainland there in 1558, making the town an essential stop on trade routes to the Americas. It was sacked and burned in 1553 by the French corsair François Le Clerc, then rebuilt and fortified, notably with the Castillo de Santa Catalina that still overlooks the bay. Its historic centre lines the Avenida Marítima with the wooden balconied façades typical of the Canaries, while the church of El Salvador and Plaza de España form its monumental heart. The town is known for its carnival, especially the "Indianos" festival, and for the once-every-five-years Fiesta of the Virgen de las Nieves, recognised as a national tourist attraction. As the island's only commercial and passenger port, it remains La Palma's essential maritime gateway to Tenerife, Gran Canaria and the mainland.
Santa Cruz de la Palma Ferry Terminal
The ferry terminal in Santa Cruz de la Palma sits right next to Plaza de la Constitución, in the middle of the old town, just minutes on foot from the city's main sights and shops. It's an easy walk from the centre, or a short taxi ride from La Palma's airport about 10 kilometres to the south. As a domestic route within the Canary Islands, no passport is needed — simply check in at the company counter before boarding. Arriving roughly 1.5 to 2 hours before the scheduled departure is advised, with a stricter margin recommended when bringing a vehicle or travelling in high season.
Santa Cruz de Tenerife
With more than 210,000 residents, Santa Cruz de Tenerife is the island's largest city and the second-largest in the Canaries after Las Palmas, with which it shares the status of regional capital. Founded on 3 May 1494 by the conquistador Alonso Fernández de Lugo, who planted a cross there on the feast of the Finding of the Holy Cross, the city takes its name from that founding moment. Long a secondary port, it grew in importance after the volcanic destruction of Garachico in 1706. The city also distinguished itself by repelling a British naval attack led by Admiral Nelson on 25 July 1797, in which he lost an arm — an episode still celebrated locally. From 1833 to 1927 it was the archipelago's sole capital, before sharing that status with Las Palmas. Its architecture mixes colonial heritage, such as the parish church of la Concepción, with modern landmarks like the Auditorio de Tenerife. The city is world-famous for its carnival, one of the largest anywhere. Its harbour is a major maritime crossroads between Europe, Africa and the Americas, and the main hub for inter-island links in the western Canaries.
Santa Cruz de Tenerife Ferry Terminal
The Santa Cruz de Tenerife ferry terminal sits at Moll de Sant Bertran, right in the heart of the harbour, roughly a ten-minute walk from the town centre and Plaza de España. Local buses and the tram both serve the terminal, and Tenerife North airport is about 10 kilometres away. Because this is a domestic Spanish crossing within the Canaries, no passport control applies — travellers just need to complete the usual check-in at the counter before boarding. Plan to arrive about 1.5 to 2 hours before departure, allowing extra time in high season or when travelling with a car.
