Departure Port

Cadiz

Built on a narrow spit of land in the bay of the same name, Cadiz has around 115,000 residents and claims the title of continuously inhabited Western Europe's oldest city. Founded around 1100 BC by the Phoenicians as Gadir, it later passed through Carthaginian, Roman, Visigothic and Muslim hands before being retaken by Christian forces in 1262. Its true golden age arrived after the discovery of the Americas: by the 18th century the city held a monopoly on trade with the New World and had become one of Spain's richest ports. That prosperous era left behind a Baroque cathedral crowned with a golden dome, the Tavira Tower, its old ramparts and the Castle of San Sebastián. Cadiz also holds a place in political history as the birthplace of Spain's first Constitution, proclaimed in 1812 during the Napoleonic siege, and today it is famous for one of Spain's most spirited carnivals. Its economy rests on fishing, shipbuilding and tourism, while its harbour remains a historic anchor point for maritime routes to the Canary Islands.

Practical Information

Cadiz Ferry Terminal

The Trasmediterránea terminal sits right next to Cadiz's railway station, an easy walk from the old town. Travellers based in the historic centre can simply walk over, while those coming from further out will find buses and taxis readily available. Because the Canary Islands sit outside the EU's VAT zone, sailings there involve a document and customs check, so it's worth allowing extra time — arriving roughly 2 to 3 hours ahead is recommended, especially during the busiest summer crossings.

Arrival Port

Arrecife

The capital of Lanzarote since 1852, Arrecife is today home to around 52,000 people, making it the island's largest town. First recorded as a modest fishing hamlet in the 15th century, it takes its name from the volcanic reefs that once sheltered local boats from pirates and corsairs. The town endured repeated raids, most notably by the corsair Dogan in 1571, who plundered much of it — prompting fortifications such as the 18th-century Castillo de San Gabriel, now linked to the centre by a small bridge and home to a contemporary art collection. The parish church of San Ginés, the town's patron saint, and the small lagoon of Charco de San Ginés, lined with traditional fishermen's houses, form its picturesque heart. Long overshadowed by the old inland capital of Teguise, Arrecife rose to prominence thanks to its strategic coastal position and natural harbour shielded by the reefs. Today built around tourism, fishing and the island's administration, it retains an appealing, unpretentious character. Its harbour, one of the busiest in the Canaries by passenger numbers, serves as the island's principal maritime gateway.

Practical Information

Arrecife Ferry Terminal

Arrecife's ferry terminal stands on Avenida de los Mármoles, right on the seafront, within easy walking distance of the town centre and the Charco de San Ginés lagoon. Taxis and local buses reach it from anywhere in town, and Lanzarote's airport is barely 5 kilometres away. Since this is a domestic Spanish route linking the Canary Islands, there's no passport check involved — just the usual check-in at the company desk. Turning up about 1.5 to 2 hours before departure is advisable, and that window can stretch further during peak tourist season.
