The capital of the Balearic Islands and of Mallorca, Palma has around 420,000 residents, making it the archipelago's largest city. Founded in 123 BC by the Roman consul Quintus Caecilius Metellus following the conquest of the island, it later became a Byzantine outpost before being absorbed into the Muslim world as Medina Mayurqa from 902 onward. The city was taken in 1229 by King James I of Aragon, a founding moment that brought it permanently into the Catalan-Aragonese sphere. Its historic core preserves many traces of that history: the imposing Gothic cathedral of La Seu, overlooking the bay and partly restored by Gaudí, the Almudaina royal palace, once home to caliphs and later Aragonese kings, and Bellver Castle, a rare circular Gothic fortress. A cosmopolitan city blending historic heritage with a lively cultural scene, Palma has grown since the mid-20th century into one of the Mediterranean's leading tourist capitals. Its harbour, at the foot of the old town, is one of Spain's busiest, handling both cruise traffic and regular ferry links to the Iberian mainland and the rest of the archipelago.
Palma de Mallorca Ferry Terminal
The maritime station sits at Moll Vell 3-5, right in the historic harbour, less than a kilometre from Palma's centre and its cathedral — an easy reach on foot, by taxi or by city bus from any district, with the airport about 10 kilometres away. As this is a route between Spanish ports, EU citizens face no passport check, just a valid ID at check-in. Arriving 1 to 2 hours before departure is advisable depending on whether you're travelling on foot or with a vehicle, with extra time recommended in high season.
