Minorca's capital until the 18th century, Ciutadella today counts around 32,000 residents, making it the island's largest town ahead of Mahón. Inhabited since antiquity, the settlement took its present shape after the Christian conquest of 1287 by Alfonso III of Aragon, which brought Minorca firmly into the European fold. As the island's episcopal seat, the town preserves an aristocratic old quarter of narrow lanes, a legacy of its days as a religious and political capital. Its darkest chapter came in 1558, when the Ottoman fleet under Admiral Piyale Pasha besieged and destroyed much of the city — an obelisk in Plaça des Born still commemorates the event. Nearby, Talayotic remains such as the Naveta des Tudons and the cyclopean walls of Son Catlar point to one of the Mediterranean's richest prehistoric settlements. A Gothic cathedral, raised over a former mosque, still dominates the historic core. Known for its Saturday morning market and its Sant Joan festival, Ciutadella has a more traditional character than Mahón. Its harbour, a narrow natural inlet hemmed in by the town's houses, remains an essential gateway to Mallorca and the mainland.
Ciutadella Ferry Terminal
Ciutadella's harbour occupies a narrow inlet right in the heart of the old town, putting the ferry terminal just a few minutes' walk from the cathedral and Plaça des Born. It can be reached by car, taxi or on foot from the centre, though vehicle access to the quays can slow down in summer given how narrow the surrounding streets are. No passport is required for this domestic Spanish link to Mallorca or the mainland — just the usual counter check-in before boarding. Arriving around 1.5 to 2 hours before departure is recommended, especially during the high tourist season.
