Rosslare – Fishguard with Stena Line

This route links Rosslare with Fishguard, operated by Stena Line. The two ferry terminals are about 95 kilometres (50 nautical miles) apart in a straight line. Founded in Gothenburg in 1962, Stena Line became a major force in British waters in 1990, when it bought Sealink British Ferries and doubled in size. It runs Fishguard–Rosslare, Belfast–Liverpool and Harwich–Hook of Holland, among other routes.

Rosslare

Rosslare's best sights are a short drive away. On the Hook peninsula, about an hour west, the Hook Lighthouse dates from the thirteenth century and is often described as the oldest operational lighthouse in the world. In Wexford, the Wexford Festival Opera has brought singers to a small town theatre every autumn since 1951. Near New Ross, the Kennedy Homestead at Dunganstown is the farm that President John F. Kennedy's great-grandfather left to emigrate to Boston during the Famine, now a visitor centre. Between them, they make Rosslare a good starting point for a few days exploring Ireland's sunny south-east.

Fishguard

Fishguard has had a brush with Hollywood. Its tiny Lower Town harbour, little changed since the eighteenth century, stood in for Llareggub in the film of Dylan Thomas's Under Milk Wood, shot in 1971 with Richard Burton, Elizabeth Taylor and Peter O'Toole. In August 1909 the Cunard liner Mauretania called at Fishguard when the company chose it as a port of call for its Atlantic liners, and for a few years the town hoped to become a major transatlantic port. The Rosslare ferries that use the harbour today carry on its link with Ireland. West of the town, the lighthouse at Strumble Head is one of the best places on the Pembrokeshire Coast Path to watch seals and porpoises.
