Founded in Copenhagen in 1866, DFDS is one of the oldest shipping companies in Europe still sailing under its original initials. For British travellers it runs Dover–Calais, Dover–Dunkirk, Newhaven–Dieppe and the overnight Newcastle–Amsterdam crossing, mostly on routes it gained through its 2010 purchase of Norfolkline.

Departing from

Amsterdam (IJmuiden)

Ferries from Newcastle do not dock in Amsterdam itself but at IJmuiden, on the North Sea coast about 30 kilometres west of the city, at the entrance to the canal that links the capital to the sea. Here the IJmuiden sea lock, opened in January 2022, is billed as the largest sea lock in the world, at 500 metres long and 70 metres wide. A short drive south, the beach resort of Zandvoort has a motor-racing circuit that has staged the Dutch Grand Prix. In the city itself, the Van Gogh Museum holds the world's largest collection of the painter's work, and in spring the bulb fields around Lisse and the Keukenhof gardens, roughly an hour's drive from the port, turn the countryside into long stripes of tulips and hyacinths.

Arriving in

Newcastle

The ferry terminal is at North Shields, around eight miles east of the city centre on the north bank of the Tyne. Newcastle's engineering heritage is easy to trace: Robert Stephenson and Company built the locomotive Rocket here in 1829, a machine that helped to prove the future of the railway. At Wallsend, a short Metro ride from the centre, the Segedunum Roman fort marks the eastern end of Hadrian's Wall, with a reconstructed bathhouse and a viewing tower over the excavations. Across the river in Gateshead, Antony Gormley's Angel of the North, completed in 1998 and about 20 metres tall, watches over the A1 and is one of the most photographed pieces of public art in Britain. After an overnight crossing, Northumberland's castles and beaches begin within an hour's drive.
