The Peninsular and Oriental Steam Navigation Company dates from 1837, and today's P&O Ferries has been owned by DP World since 2019. Departing from

Liverpool

The best view of Liverpool is from the water. The Mersey Ferries still cross between Pier Head, Seacombe and Woodside, with a commentary on a waterfront dominated by the Three Graces: the Royal Liver Building, the Cunard Building and the Port of Liverpool Building. The river has a place in a very different story too. In April 1918 two Mersey ferries, Iris and Daffodil, were sent to Belgium and took part in the Royal Navy's raid on Zeebrugge. More recently, in May 2023, the city hosted the Eurovision Song Contest on behalf of Ukraine, which could not stage it after the Russian invasion. The Museum of Liverpool, beside the waterfront and free to enter, is a good way to fill the hours before a sailing.

Arriving in

Dublin

Dublin Port, where the ferries from Holyhead and Liverpool dock, lies at the mouth of the River Liffey, a short distance east of the city centre. Phoenix Park, one of the largest enclosed urban parks in Europe, covers about 700 hectares and is home to a herd of fallow deer and to Dublin Zoo, which opened in 1831. Kilmainham Gaol, built in 1796, tells the story of Irish nationalism; the leaders of the 1916 Rising were held and executed there. Out on the bay, the DART coastal railway runs from the city centre to Howth, with its harbour and fish restaurants, and to Dalkey, a village with a medieval castle and some of the best sea views near the capital.
