Jersey has a long history of attracting colourful characters. The actress Lillie Langtry, the "Jersey Lily" who became a favourite of Edward VII, was born here in 1853. In 1959 the naturalist Gerald Durrell opened a zoo in the grounds of Les Augrès Manor, and today the Durrell Wildlife Park is a leading centre for breeding endangered species. The island celebrates with the Battle of Flowers, a summer parade of floral floats held since 1902, and with some of the biggest tides in Europe, a range of up to about twelve metres, which cuts off the Corbière lighthouse from the shore twice a day until the causeway reappears. Place names often have French forms, a reminder that Jersey's legal and cultural roots lie in Normandy, though everyday speech is English.

The ferry port at Jersey

Where the ferries arrive: Ferries arrive at St Helier harbour. The year-round services from the UK and Saint-Malo use the Elizabeth Terminal on La Route du Port Elizabeth, JE1 1HB. Manche Iles Express, from Granville and Carteret, uses the Albert Terminal in season.

By road: At the Route de la Libération roundabout, take the second exit onto La Route du Port Elizabeth and follow the signs to the ferry port.

By bus: The nearest bus stop in St Helier is about a 10-minute walk from the terminal.

Check-in: Motorists should arrive at least 60 minutes before departure and foot passengers at least 40 minutes before.

Good to know: Jersey banknotes and coins are not legal tender in the UK, although sterling is also used on the island.
