Departing from

Liverpool

The best view of Liverpool is from the water. The Mersey Ferries still cross between Pier Head, Seacombe and Woodside, with a commentary on a waterfront dominated by the Three Graces: the Royal Liver Building, the Cunard Building and the Port of Liverpool Building. The river has a place in a very different story too. In April 1918 two Mersey ferries, Iris and Daffodil, were sent to Belgium and took part in the Royal Navy's raid on Zeebrugge. More recently, in May 2023, the city hosted the Eurovision Song Contest on behalf of Ukraine, which could not stage it after the Russian invasion. The Museum of Liverpool, beside the waterfront and free to enter, is a good way to fill the hours before a sailing.

Arriving in

Belfast

Belfast has a habit of producing inventions and imagination. In 1888 John Boyd Dunlop, a Scottish-born vet living in the city, patented the pneumatic tyre after trying to give his young son's tricycle a smoother ride. C. S. Lewis, author of The Chronicles of Narnia, was born here in 1898, and East Belfast's C. S. Lewis Square is filled with bronze sculptures of Narnian characters. In the centre, the Crown Liquor Saloon, a Victorian pub owned by the National Trust, is all ornate tiles, carved wood and private snugs, and St George's Market, a Victorian covered market, opens from Friday to Sunday. The Giant's Causeway is a little over an hour away by car along the Causeway Coastal Route.
